Expectations for Time Spent for Online Classes

Students in an online class can expect to spend about the same amount of time per week as they would for a face-to-face class. The real difference is that most of your learning can be done on your schedule, since you don't have a predetermined class time.

A good rule of thumb is that for every credit hour, expect to spend 4 clock hours per week: 1 hour online (the equivalent of being in class) and 3 studying and reading. Take NURS 5301 - Advanced Pathophysiology as an example:

  • 3 credit hours
  • 3 clock hours online, including:
    • watching video lectures
    • participating in discussion forums
    • taking quizzes
    • meeting with other students (via Skype, Google Hangout, etc.)
    • reading instructions for upcoming assignments
  • 9 clock hours reading and studying

Since each semester of the program is either 9 or 10 credit hours total, expect to spend 36-40 hours per week on course work. Some students may need more or less time depending on their study skills and learning habits.
